Hand held speed detectors for Hatton Residents (published 13 Oct 06)

POLICE have reaffirmed their commitment to giving power to the people of nearby Hatton as part of a crackdown on speeding motorists.

Teams of volunteers will be handed hi-tech laser powered speed detection equipment to slow drivers down in a pilot scheme to be run in Hatton this month.

The Community Speed Watch scheme will see villagers stationed on the roadside armed with equipment usually used by American baseball fans to track the speed of balls during games.

"The
scheme will last for two months in Hatton and we will report back on its success some time in the New Year. We are determined its potential will be realised."

Those caught speeding will be sent warning letters, not fines, although police say that court action will follow if persistent speeders are identified.

If the scheme is successful it could be rolled out across South Derbyshire.
