1.0 Purpose of the meeting

The meeting was opened by Tutbury Parish Chair (TPC), Miss Maria Guest, who explained that the meeting was an exploratory meeting for TPC to gauge the feeling amongst residents about the future use of Tutbury’s five bus shelters (Burton Street, Duke Street, Holts Lane, High Street, Park Lane).

Residents living nearby to Bus Shelters have, for some time, become concerned about groups of young people congregating in and around bus shelters.

The meeting was attended by 12 parishioners, Cllr W Crossley, Cllr T Spencer-Smith and TPC Clerk, Steve Powell. Apologies received from Cllr Dave Kennedy.

2.0 Comments from the floor

A spokesperson for Tutbury Residents Association advised that elderly residents feel intimidated by groups of youths in bus stops particularly after dark.

It was also felt that there is an issue over enforcement of existing laws. TPC advised that they had been approached some time ago to contribute to a joint funding scheme for a Community Warden - in conjunction with nearby Stretton. The floor heard that this would mean TPC virtually doubling it’s rate to gain (on average) “half a community warden”.

Concerns were raised, from the floor, over environmental health as regards the build up of litter in bus shelters.

Present at the meeting was a local licensee who gave an example of eggs being thrown at a motorcyclist recently from a nearby bus shelter.

3.0 Time of day for problems

Six O’clock in the evening was cited as a particularly bad time of day for youths congregating.

4.0 Cost of upkeep to bus shelters

TPC advised that costs associated with the upkeep of the bus shelters tended to be cyclical.

For the period 04 to 06 repair costs were approx £2,500 for all five shelters. Whilst for the period 03 to 04 costs were approx £150.

5.0 Actions to be considered

One view point was that the bus shelters should be made less comfortable for any one considering “hanging around”. Removal of seats from shelters was one option which may be considered.

6.0 Legal status of meeting

At the requests of Cllr Crossley, the Parish Clerk advised that as part of the legal frame work which TPC operated under, TPC is duty bound to consider all the views put forward, but is not duty bound to act upon all or any of the suggestions made.

TPC Chair thanked those who had attended the meeting.

Meeting closed 20:40.
