On 1 January 1973 the UK, Ireland and Denmark all became member states of the EEC

For some time there was unease, here at home, concerning the terms of Britainís membership. In the mid 1970ís those terms of membership were re-negotiated by Harold Wilsonís Labour Government. The question of whether Britain should remain a member of the EU was put to the people in a national referendum.

36 years ago on Thursday 5 June 1975, Britain held itís first national referendum, the issue being continued membership of the European Union - or the EEC as it was then called.

Earlier in the year the House of Commons voted by 396 to 170 votes in favour of HM Governmentís recommendation in favour of Britainís continued membership of the EEC.

The final count, at Earls Court in London showed that two thirds of the population voted in favour of continued membership. Only the Shetland Isles voted to leave the EEC.
