Tutbury Scout Group this year celebrate their 60th anniversary.

The group was first registered on 5 June 1947 as the 12th Burton, 1st Tutbury. Meetings were originally held in the Congregational School Room in Monk Street.

The first Scout Master was J J Brown and the Cub Master was W R Dale – both of whom worked at the nearby RAF Fauld. The total membership was 36.

Due to changes at RAF Fauld, Mr Brown left the area and was succeeded as Scout Master by Mr Dale.

In 1963 Janet Redfern joined as an assistant Club Leader and later took over as Akela.

1973 saw the group move to their present Head Quarters in Cornmill Lane.




By 1977, Rae Bradshaw, who joined the group as a cub in 1953, took over the role of Group Leader.

The first Beaver Group was formed in 1981, for boys aged between 6 and 8 years old. The first Beaver Leader being Margaret Mansfield who was succeeded by Joan Baxter.

The Castle Venture Group, for boys and girls aged 15 to 20, was formed in 1983 under the leadership of Peter Baxter.

At the time of the 40th Anniversary, in 1987, membership numbers had reached 104 boys, 2 girls in the venture unit and 18 leaders.
