June meeting: The Icing on the Cake |
On Thursday 12th June, 35 members attended the meeting for a demonstration of how to make sugar flowers. Jeannean Howe-McCartin held us enthralled with her supremely skilled modeling of flowers; whilst she told us how she became involved in cake making and cake decorating. |
Jeannean started by making cakes for her children’s birthdays and very quickly started receiving orders from friends and family. She started a training course and at the end of the first term was asked to teach the course. She spent some years teaching students to a high standard in cake decorating before deciding to open her own business in Tutbury. |
As you can imagine, it might be a little difficult to see the fine detail of the sugar art but we were very lucky to have the help of the husband of one our members. Bob Wood filmed the procedures at close range, projecting it onto a big screen so that we could see every delicate movement of Jeannean’s hands as she shaped the sweet pea flowers. |
As usual, the evening was rounded off with tasty refreshments as W.I. members take it in turns to provide drinks and snacks. |

Best Kept Village |
Andy Allen has kindly photographed the bench on the triangle and this is on view on the village website. We continue to litter pick each week. |
The next meeting is on Thursday 10th July at 7.30 p.m. and the guest speaker will give us a talk on genetically modified crops. Mike Davey does not support either side of the debate and we can look forward to an unbiased discussion of the issues. |
We always welcome visitors, so come to the Village Hall between 7 and 7.30 p.m. or contact our secretary, Carol Hall, on 01283 813161 or visit www.tutbury.org/wi |
