On the Morning of 27 November 1944, Fauld near Tutbury was the scene of the biggest explosion ever seen in Britain.

An underground ammunition dump, operated by the RAF exploded. The explosion created a crater half a mile wide and 400 ft deep. The explosion was an official secret for thirty years, until 27 November 1974 when the “gagging order” was lifted.

Reproduced below, courtesy of Staffordhire Newspapers, is the story as presented on 27 November 1974, when the 30 year rule expired.
