On 1 January 1973 the UK, Ireland and Denmark all became member states of the EEC |
For some time there was unease, here at home, concerning the terms of Britain’s membership. In the mid 1970’s those terms of membership were re-negotiated by Harold Wilson’s Labour Government. The question of whether Britain should remain a member of the EU was put to the people in a national referendum. |
36 years ago on Thursday 5 June 1975, Britain held it’s first national referendum, the issue being continued membership of the European Union - or the EEC as it was then called. |
Earlier in the year the House of Commons voted by 396 to 170 votes in favour of HM Government’s recommendation in favour of Britain’s continued membership of the EEC. |
The final count, at Earls Court in London showed that two thirds of the population voted in favour of continued membership. Only the Shetland Isles voted to leave the EEC. |
